Since selling his company, ‘Millarworld’, to Netflix in 2017, Mark Millar has been hard at work. But we’ve seen nothing on Netflix, that is, until today. Netflix have finally given us a teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated series ‘Jupter’s Legacy’, based on Scottish artist and writer team Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. The series will stream exclusively on Netflix on the 7th of May 2021 and will consist of eight episodes.
We covered Mark’s tease for his plans in 2021 here, and covered a brief biography of the writer here. Millar is almost a household name at this point, having several films based on his own intellectual property in addition to select work for Marvel. The films Wanted, Kick-Ass, Kick-Ass 2, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and The King’s Man are all based on comics Millar created with collaborators and owned by the creators themselves, while the 2015’s Fantastic Four, Captain America: Civil War and Logan are based on Millar’s comics ‘Ultimate Fantastic Four’, ‘Civil War’ and ‘Old Man Logan’ respectively. Despite being a hot name in comics, Millar is more popularly known for the adaptations of his work.
Frank Quitely, real name Vince Deighan, is arguably one of the most famous comics artists in the world. The BBC have produced a documentary on the Scotsman, he has hosted a TEDx Talk and is the subject of his own exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. Video links for the former two are at the bottom of this article.
The pair are notoriously a big deal in the comics industry, and in pop culture in general. Their first mainstream work together was in DC/Wildstorm’s The Authority but their true masterpiece is Jupiter’s Legacy, published through Image Comics in 2013.
Jupiter’s Legacy stars Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Matt Lanter and Mike Wade. It is a tribute to the ‘Golden Age of Comics’ and centres on the first superheroes handing the torch down to their children in a modern setting.
Mark Millar and Frank Quitely are executive producing with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Dan McDermott, Steven S. DeKnight, James Middleton and Sang Kyu Kim. Netflix is developing a series for American Jesus, films for Empress, Huck, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter and Reborn (starring Sandra Bullock), an anime based on Supercrooks produced by Bones of Fullmetal Alchemist fame.
