The Finals, developed by Embark Studios is a fast-paced multiplayer shooter which aims to supply a thrilling and Hollywood inspired gameplay experience. Here’s what we thought about it.
With heist style gameplay like Payday and level destruction reminiscent of the Battlefield series the game aims to deliver thrilling and adrenaline pumping action right from the go.
The Finals offers three very distinct classes which all bring something unique to the arena. The three classes are the light, a fast and nimble class focusing on burst action and chaos with there SMGs and shot shotguns, with utility like thermal vision and breach charges their whole role is to be in and out as fast as possible while causing as many problems as possible.
The medium class is your run-of-the-mill middle class, offering both strong weaponry and great utility like shields and healing as a trade of for speed and size and last but by no means least, the heavy. This is the class with the largest hit points and the scariest guns. The heavy is the tank of the team, offering shields and destructive power in the form of grenade launchers but trades it all off for being the slowest on the roster.
Alongside two teammates you’ll enter a virtual arena which can be based in some of the most recognisable cities in the world, Las Vegas, Monaco and Seoul where players will compete to steal and win cash, but is it really that simple? Well yes and no. with the ability to quite literally steal the win from under your opponents the gameplay is rather simple, kill and collect coins to win, very similar to Call of Duty’s Kill confirmed.
However, what makes it different is the ability to destroy the map, from houses to walls, to the roof above you whether it be using explosives or abilities like the heavy’s charge the whole map can be changed through destruction and this helps create blockbuster moments.
With the launch of the game as a surprise to many, The Finals has shown that great looking games don’t have to come with the triple A price tag, in fact this game is free to play across all platforms, while the microtransactions there are not pay to win, nor pay to progress faster skins or weapons. The only thing you’re able to buy are skins for your chosen character. All weapons and gadgets are earned through gameplay.
With fast-paced action, beautiful backdrops, and epic moments The Finals aims to deliver on truly memorable moments and with Embark Studios goal of giving the players a fun and ever evolving game, who knows what will await us all in the arena. It may be called The Finals, but we’re just getting started.
