Proving their ever-growing confidence, Barstaff took to 33 Oldham Street to perform their infectious new tracks as well as, tease what is yet to come.

One of the bands newest, catchy singles ‘Tracy Island’ kicks of the gig with enthusiasm. As the band begin, the steamy room fills with fans immediately dancing, knowing they can let go off their worries to some of their favourite, feel-good tracks. During the song one of guitarist Josh’s strings breaks and the band search for another guitar. It’s obvious the crowd are itching for the compelling music to continue but there’s no panic as the four are full of charisma and entertain the crowd with a mini darts tournament for a few minutes. “We’ve got a new one” frontman Ben suddenly shouts and the whole audience cheers before they continue onto an exciting new track.

Throughout the gig a few unreleased songs are showcased, beginning with an upbeat track, infused with vibrant guitar and not only lead singer Ben’s recognisable vocals, but also bassist Ciara’s voice adding a sprinkle of tenderness. An audience member at the front begins literally bowing to the band as others squawk in anticipation, wanting more.

“This will be out Wednesday” Ben announces before another yet to be released song is unveiled. Opening with a powerful guitar riff reminding me of something Pixies would release, it blends into Ben’s serotonin-heavy singing.

Next, the show slows down for two heartfelt tracks. While picking up his acoustic guitar Ben explains he wrote a song for his 13-year-old Jack Russell. “He’s my best friend and I love him” he says as the crowd begin to wave their flashlights. Contrasting most of Barstaff’s catalogue, the song is tranquil and relaxed but still incredibly passionate. Teary eyed, as she describes the following meaningful track, Ciara takes centre stage to tear out fan’s hearts with vulnerable lyrics grappling her relationship with her mum. The beautiful song cuts deep and evidently means a lot to the band as well as, to audience members who are on the verge of tears.

Soon enough, they are back to the classics as ‘Telephone Tuff Guy’, the latest Barstaff single, makes its first live debut in Manchester since its release. Striking guitar and punchy drumming give a taste of what’s in store on the bands next EP. The crowd echoes the lyrics “Why’d I call when you just ignore me” getting louder and more exhilarated each time.

“This is Robbie Williams Rock DJ” Ben jokes before launching into their final song, a crowd pleaser ‘Outta your league.’ Bursting with quirky riffs and concluding using potent drumming, the song will always be dancefloor-ready, having the audience grooving constantly.

An eruption of “ONE MORE SONG!” explodes out of the audience, not quite ready to leave yet. “We’ve got no more” Ben laughs looking around the room before they give in and the melody to ‘Rockets’, their first release, begins. Smiling at each other filled with joy, the band are so thankful for the growth they’ve experienced since they were formed. After the bouncy hit finishes, they take the time to speak to the audience, signing setlists and thanking fans.

Zigzagging through excitement, relationships, heartache and friendship, Barstaff gigs are full of community and people who purely want to enjoy some thrilling music.
