“They said I was a slut, they said I was a sinner” abruptly opens CHERYM’s album like a slap in the face. Beginning strong and powerful ‘Alpha Beta Sigma’ starts with slow, deep guitar before it quickens becoming more upbeat and electric. Fierce vocals depict the feeling of being judged by others especially those with religious beliefs.

CHERYM are a queer pop punk trio from Derry. The band consists of drummer Alannagh Doherty, Guitarist/Vocalist Hannah Richardson and Bassists/vocalist Nyree Dawn. The three are aiming to break into a highly male dominated scene by sharing their experiences with gender and sexuality growing up in Ireland.

The second track ‘The Thing About Them’ grapples with the theme of gender and fighting for acceptance. Whilst Richardsons intense, sharp vocals state “It’s they them” you hear two male voices with unaccepting statements. With thrilling, loud guitar and drums throughout, the song is heroic, showing what they have been forced to endure due to their gender whilst standing up for what they believe in.

Wholesome and care-free ‘Taking Up Sports’ is infused with stimulating guitar riffs and lyrics about the familiar feeling of having a crush. Before the last chorus, the guitar amplifies becoming explosive and exciting while Richardsons vocals continue cheery and bright. Following the previous tracks, the easy-going vibe feels like the calm after a storm.

A daring, bold rhythm runs through the inspiring track ‘If I Was A Man’. Concentrating on the mistreatment of females the song is influential. Tense drumming startles you at points keeping your attention on the empowering lyrics.

At the other end of the spectrum ‘Binary Star’ opens with tranquil acoustic guitar, followed by peaceful vocals. The chorus bursts with emotion and a loving feeling. Most of the track feels relaxed and at peace until the guitar intensifies and the drumming builds louder. The sudden change catches you off guard but fits the song perfectly. “Please don’t go” is a raw and moving ending line.

‘Am I Enough’ commences with a few guitar strums and thumping drums. As Richardsons vocals begin, the guitar escalates, and the drumming continues potent. Ernest lyrics like “Am I enough” home in on overthinking and facing insecurities but eventually finding a way to overcome them and be yourself.

A thunderous end to the album ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’ has energising vocals while the guitar is fearless and assured. “I’m only a human too” sums up the bands message about individuality and embracing everybody for who they are.

Overall CHERYM have the same intense, female indie rock vibe as bands like Pale Waves and Paramore. Despite this ‘Take It Or Leave It’ is a unique album fuelled by honesty and bravery. The album has a welcoming feeling and is sure to bring comfort to those who have faced similar struggles.

‘Take It Or Leave It’ is set for release 16th February 2024.
