The air is thick tonight as Leeds Academy plays host to the Klaxons who are on fine form and pull out all the stops (vocalist Jamie Reynolds hobbles on aided by crutches before he sits down happily and rips into his guitar), as the other members bounce around with all the force and vigour of a true alternative band turning their polished nu-rave pop into heavy and hard-hitting stadium rock.
From emotive new stuff like ‘Surfing The Void‘s lead single ‘Echoes‘ to the most anthemic and loud tracks from 2007’s ‘Myths Of The Near Future‘ including ‘It’s Not Over Yet‘, ‘Atlantis To Interzone’ and the more recent ‘Flashover‘, Klaxons create an energetic and soulful atmosphere that feeds the hundreds of screaming electro-indie and rock fans as they shift back and forward to create a massive semi-mosh-wave of sweat, plaid shirts and glowsticks.
The band is an excellent host for this good-natured mayhem and each artist gives it their all to entertain the Yorkshire crowd, regularly stopping to thank the audience for their support. Of course that’s nice to see, but more importantly, the intensity (supported by some heavy-duty lighting and sheer volume) of the Klaxons‘ show arguably opens them up to appeal to a far wider audience than on record – it’s something else. Whatever genre of alternative music you are into, see this band.
