Texas-based rock quartet Good Looks electric new album ‘Lived Here For A While’ is set for release June 7th via Keeled Scales. The infectious single “Can You See Me Tonight?”, which has been dropped with a video, is a taste of the upcoming album.
The new track is infectious as lead singer Tyler Jordan details his relationship with his mom. Alongside the vocals is guitarist Jake Ames‘ twangy opening riff as catchy as Jordan’s searching chorus, before exploding into a feedback-drenched guitar solo at the end.
Jordan comments on the theme of the song saying it’s about, “the connection to why I write songs and perform them, and how it affects my other relationships, turning darkness to light in the process.”
directed by Riley Engemoen, the video features local luminaries Dr. Dan & his wife Doris. He explains, “My friend Liz and I met Dan & Doris at the Broken Spoke and have since been creating a documentary on them called ‘Forcefield of Love.’ Dr. Dan is known as ‘Austin’s coolest marriage and family therapist.’ Him and Doris are enamored with one another, always color-coordinated in a honeymoon state. They spend most evenings dancing through Austin’s honky tonks and jazz clubs – blissfully and unabashedly forming a quantum energy field of Love – hypnotizing all of those in their orbit.”
Stereogum depict the band “On their album’s lead single, the Texas indie band pulls from heartland-rockin’ forebears like Wilco and the War On Drugs while staying spry on their feet with traces of power-pop and emo.”
The band have been through a lot together including lead guitarist Jake Ames accident where he was hit by a car crossing the street, fracturing his skull and tailbone in 2016. It doesn’t end there, in 2023 their van was rear-ended by a speeding car, causing an accident on the highway that lead to their equipment, instruments, merch etc, being engulfed in flames.
Despite this, the group never give up and in some way’s these incidents may have brought them closer together. Jordan explains how resilience was essential to Good Looks and why the songs on ‘Lived Here For A While‘ resonate so profoundly. “Driving to those shows immediately after the crash, I had a lot of time to think and process everything. Honestly, what better way to heal than to see people that you love, play music and do what you were put on this earth to do.”
