The band marked the release with a new single, ‘Marionettes.’
Brighton-based post-metal band El Moono have just released their debut album ‘The Waking Sun.’ The LP follows up on the success of their previous EP, ‘Temple Corrupted’, which received rave reviews from a number of prominent publications, including Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, and Guitar World.
To mark the release of the new record, the band have also shared their new single, ‘Marionettes.’ Chatting about the track, the band addressed the lyrics’ prominent themes of control. “[it’s] about being someone’s puppet, understanding their obsessive need to control, while dealing with the affects. The track is about discovering these flaws in somebody, and dealing with the monotony and fatigue that comes with it, while empathising with those that are not willing to think about others.”
The band also made mention of some of the cut’s more esoteric musical elements: “Through the walls of Hammond organs, synths and guitars re-amped through a Leslie rotary cabinet, listen out for the beer kegs being hit by a baseball bat in the riffs.” You can have a listen for yourself below.
‘The Waking Sun’ itself was recorded at Middle Farm Studios in Devon, with producer Sam Conevey, a role that the band do not seem to make decisions about lightly. They clearly put a great deal of care into how their music sounds, shown recently when they unveiled the album at a special session at Dolby Screening Room, London, where the 360-degree spatial Dolby Atmos mix “delivered depth, clarity, and sonic details unheard of elsewhere.”
As for the style the band are shooting for on the new full-length, a representative said the album, “marks an exciting turn for El Moono toward the darker and more abrasive – a more mature release from a band already marked for greatness.” The quartet’s music has been described in the past as, “off-kilter, oftentimes mind-bending, emotive, and expressive, with influences of rock, hardcore, metal, and grunge.”
El Moono will also embark on a headline tour in support of the album, with 8 dates scattered across England in late May and June.
