Let’s be frank, it’s been a miserable start to the year, whether-wise. What wouldn’t you give for a bit of sunshine, right about now? My weather dominator still hasn’t finished construction, but I do have the next best thing for you: the new Dent May single! …OK, I fully cop to that being a lame-as-hell intro, but “One Call, That’s All” gives off the kind of carefree Summer vibes which cause hacks like myself to get corny. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter has crafted an ultra-catchy, sunbeam-sweet power pop confection capable of whisking a listener, via windswept beachside drives with the roof down, back to 2010 blog-indie. I’m talking sticky guitar riff, I’m talking feather-light chorus harmonies, I’m talking earnest lyricism about unrequited love, I’m talking no-mess three-minute dead runtime, and I am of course talking fun-as-heck video.
Dent May provides context for both in the single’s press release:
The title “One Call, That’s All” is inspired by an ambulance-chasing personal injury lawyer in my hometown who famously used the slogan on billboards and TV commercials. While writing it with help from my friend Paul Cherry, I envisioned a music video where I play such a lawyer, and the idea expanded to riff on a variety of late night infomercial tropes thanks to director Nathan Castiel. The song, the sound of which was inspired by the guitar rock of my youth, flips the titular phrase to simply say, “I love you. Please call me.”
As a fan of 90s/early-00s infomercials from far too many sleepless nights before school where I’d leave the TV on in an effort to drift back off, I obviously dug the heck out of this video. You can watch it, and get the song itself stuck in your serotonin receptors, below.
“One Call, That’s All” is out now on Carpark Records.
