Spiritual Cramp release their first music since 2021 with new single ‘Phone Lines Down’, marking the beginning of their tenure with Blue Grape Music.
The San Francisco punk outfit are coming off the back of recent US dates alongside Iggy Pop, Viagra Boys, Militarie Gun and Deafheaven, amongst others, with headline shows coming up in Chicago, Detroit, Toronto and Minneapolis next month.
‘Phone Lines Down’ marks the first release since 2021’s Here Comes More Bad News EP, which itself was the first release since October 2018. That year saw both the Police State EP and Television, giving fans enough to bide their time with until they re-emerged with new material. Indeed, ‘Phone Lines Down’ is once again worth the wait, with snotty, sardonic vocals courtesy of vocalist Michael Bingham ripping across Spiritual Cramp’s punkish sound, one influenced by bands either side of the Atlantic.
The band’s sound is one of many unique variations amongst the modern renaissance within punk, with wide variants on influence and execution. Spiritual Cramp’s special blend results in a sounds too punk to be post-punk, and too post-punk to be punk. Marking the border between the two precisely, the Spiritual Cramp sound is a looser, baggier post-punk with the edge and bite that fits neatly within the wider world of punk.

The band are expected to release their debut album later this year via Blue Grape Music. Blue Grape Music was founded by original Roadrunner Records founder Cees Wessels and former Roadrunner A&R head David Rath, and the label already boast two formidable artists in Spiritual Cramp and Code Orange.
