Our next Interview is with emerging Leeds alt-rockers, Venus Grrrls.
S] Hi guys, how are you?
Hiya! We’re doing good thanks, keeping our heads during these weird and challenging times for the music industry.
S] What ideas inspired ‘Goth Girl’?
Goth Girl explores the ideas of a fickle society that is quick to point the finger at something that it doesn’t understand. This is expressed through a story of two friends hanging out and eventually realising their mutual struggles for their choice of clothes and makeup. Goth Girl is inspired by the strange interpretations of counter culture like Goths and witches and how it’s difficult to see these cultures that were once discriminated against, come into fashion and be socially acceptable.
S] What stuff inspires you outside of music, think specific people and places?
We all have a range of inspirations, from authors, professors to historical icons. Some in particular are Brene Brown, an American professor, lecturer, author, and podcast host, known for her research in vunerabiliity. Bernardine Evaristo, author of Girl, Woman, Other. Historical icons like Joan of Arc and Mary Wollenstonecraft and current environmental activists like Vanessa Nakate and Greta Thunberg.
S] How do you define success as artists now?
Success could be defined as feeling like you’ve achieved what you set out to do. For some bands that might be topping the charts and for others, getting to play at their local venue or releasing an album. For us, if we can get to a point where our platform is large enough to inspire women to play rock music, we will have succeeded.
S] What about happiness?
This doesn’t completely define happiness but being able to do what you love everyday certainly contributes to it. Like for us, being in the band, touring and recording full time would be amazing.
S] Do you guys have anything you’d like to plug, or a message for listeners who have gotten behind the band?
Our next single ‘Goth Girl’ is out on 22nd January! This is a new direction for us and we’re so excited to share it!
S] Thanks for your time!!
