In our next Band Interview we chat to Sola about music and inspirations…
How are you today?
I’m ok, all things considered, thanks! Just trying to keep going and now survive this heatwave!
How do you define success?
Success for me, has a number of definitions based on the context, but I’d say that overall, success is whenever I find peace and happiness through something I’m making/doing/being. And hopefully that “something” also provides peace and happiness to others. As cheesy as it all sounds, I don’t think of success as any one award or some amount of streams or followers. I just want to be happy and hopefully make the world a better place through whatever I’m doing.
What inspires you outside of music?
First, I’m deeply inspired by social and political events. I’ve written about society, religion, mental health, and politics in my songs before, and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon, especially right now. I’m also very inspired by other art and other people’s stories. I love reading and watching films and documentaries. I really just want to learn and enjoy as much as I can about this world before I leave it.
Aside from Covid, what are some of the biggest challenges you face right now?
Personally, my physical and mental health have been difficult. I have fibromyalgia and anxiety/depression, and this crisis certainly hasn’t helped me or anyone in that. Every day is a struggle for so many reasons, but I’m fortunate enough to have a support system to help me in this time. It’s an upward battle, but it’s one step at a time for everyone, and I’m trying to remember that.
What are your goals post-Covid?
Post-COVID, I really want to get out there and collaborate in person again with as many artists and songwriters as possible. I love songwriting camps so hopefully those open up again soon too. I also can’t wait to eventually do some tours. So lots to look forward to, I just have to stay patient!
