The single comes from the singer’s ‘Foundations EP’ due out in autumn
The legendary System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian is set to release a brand new track on May 17th, called ‘A.F Day.’ It’s a track which recalls the brutal stylings of his famous band. Though as Serj revealed, it’s not so much a matter of “recalling” as it is unearthing.
“This is a song I wrote in the early days of SOAD that I never released” he said. “The majority of the instrumentation and vocals are recordings from that time. Dystopian in mood, it’s a reflection of the angst and anti-authoritarian attitude I had to conformity.” You can hear a short teaser below.
So, while it might not exactly be full fledged new SOAD material, there’s no doubt System fans will be excited about the new cut.
The lyrics put forward this anti-authoritarian stance in classic Serj style, as he cries “Medieval educators locking horns at the playground at 5, Real live police crime shows. Submission of the population at large. The blind man cannot see all the marchers on the opposite side.” It’s a track that promises to be just as potent as anything else Serj has put his voice to.
The singer, poet, and activist talked more about the EP ‘Foundations’ at large in a recent interview, calling it “an interesting retrospective of rock music that I’ve never released from different times”, not only including the pre-SOAD ‘A.F. Day’, but also a forgotten track from around the time of his first solo album, ‘Elect The Dead.’
“It’s called ‘Foundations‘ basically because it’s the founding of my musical life. They’re very interesting songs, very different from each other: one is really heavy, one is like, really progressive, there’s just different elements to each of them. But I think they work in tandem.”
The release of the EP also accompanies the release of Tankian’s upcoming memoir ‘Down With The System’, releasing on May 14th, which will be followed by a number of in-store book signings.
