in our latest Band Spotlight, we chat to George Garnett, vocalist for East Yorkshire hardcore punks, Smiling Assassin.
How are you guys doing?
We’re all doing good! Doing our best to get through lockdown. All itching to get back in a practice room and continue writing some new music! I’ve been putting some demos together recently and the guys are hyped to play them!
How do you feel about the record now it’s out?
This is the first time I have been a part of something this big, the feedback and support we’ve had is overwhelming. I know Robbie has had a weight lifted from him and has an enormous sense of relief because he’s been working towards this tirelessly for many months.
What are the biggest challenges you face as artists?
Mainly lockdown. We’re all staying in touch as much as we can, but we want to rehearse and play gigs which is obviously impossible in current circumstances. Once it’s over our next challenge will be writing an album that’s a step up from ‘Plight of The Millennial’.
How do you define success?
I don’t really know. Success is not something I really think about. I just want to be able to write and play music and not have to worry about much else.
What motivates you all outside of music?
Personally, nothing. My life has always revolved around music, it’s the only thing I’ve ever been good at. Whether it’s watching a band, listening to an album, writing a song or playing a gig. That’s where I draw my motivation from, and I think that applies to the other guys too, we’re all in this together.
What are your plans post-lockdown?
Friends, parties, gigs and probably a lot of booze! Everyone’s missing each other and we all need to blow off steam. You can bet your ass that Smiling Assassin is gonna throw a party as soon as lockdown is over, and you’re all invited!
