In our next Band Spotlight, we chat to drummer, Tom Marsh from two-piece alternative rockers, Haggard Cat.

S] How do you define success as a band?
I guess it’s what you deem is important to you – whether you’re looking for an intrinsic reward or monetary satisfaction.
We always remember though, that we don’t have to do this if we don’t want to. We choose to be in a band, we’re not forced. We have a drive to create & we make sure that we’re having fun every step of the way. If your drive to create, make music, play gigs & ultimately get in the industry is genuine, then go full steam ahead and I’m sure you’ll find success in different forms around every corner – like we do.
S] What motivates you outside of music – think specific people, places, games and movies for example?
This is a big question! In terms of Music, then the drive to create art, be different, inspire others, travel, meet new people and have new experiences every day is what motivates us. It keeps our brains feeling active instead of laying dormant with more ‘mundane’ situations like, for some people, a typical Day Job.
However in whatever job, path, career or hobby you choose to undertake, you should always apply yourself and work hard. Self-belief and hard work can bring you back to the success you might be longing for.
S] How do you feel about ‘Challenger’ now it’s out there?
Absolutely fantastic! There was never a ‘relief that it’s done’ kinda vibe, it was always 100% excitement and fun. We love hearing about people listening to it, really makes our day and keeps us driving forward. Literally. In the van. On the M1.
S] What advice would you give to other emerging bands who might draw from your example?
Always have fun, work hard and apply yourself. If you’re not having fun, change something so you are. If you are having fun, and your desire to be in a band is genuine, you’ll have the best time ever – trust me! Also… for god-sake look after your gear! Unless you’re like me and play drums like I’m putting up a shed.
S] What have you learned about yourselves through the music that you’ve made, from the start of your respective careers, up until this point?
We’ve come to discover that we know what we like. We’re definitely more self aware with ourselves and our surroundings and especially of the industry. We’ve been hardened over time, we’ve been through ups and downs but the one thing that keeps driving us is the desire to create music. We now know that this is the most important thing for us as people and as a band. The music comes first, and everything else is secondary.
