In our next Band Spotlight, we chat to Run Into The Night!
[like_to_read][/like_to_read]S] What inspires you outside of music, think specific people, places and movies for example?
Even when we’re not writing music, we spend a lot of time together and one of our interests are exploring abandoned buildings such as theme parks, castles, mansions and hospitals. There’s something fascinating about these beautiful buildings that are rich with history yet forgotten and they’re not too hard to find in Scotland!
Another influence for us is film. We are both fans of Quentin Tarantino’s films such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Django Unchained. There’s nothing more inspiring than a good old revenge movie with an amazing soundtrack to trigger ideas of inspiration for music.
S] What challenges do you face as a band?
Sometimes it can be a challenge to find time in a band. Especially as we both work full-time jobs and there is so much involved in booking tours, recording and getting everything ready for a new release. It’s something we do our best to manage between the both of us however it’s one of the tasks we must do as a DIY artist.
S] What have you learned about yourself as musicians and artists since being in a band?
Progression! We only have one rule in the band and that is to never rule anything out. Since we started Run Into The Night we have really connected as musicians and spent a lot of time experimenting and fusing genres from punk, garage, blues to 60s pop! It keeps things exciting and also pushes us to find new instruments and samples to use in our music such as organ, percussion and even radio signals! We want every song to be better than the last and due to this Christina takes her time writing and really thinks about concepts and lyrics for each song so each track offers something different.
S] What advice would you give to others?
Do it yourself! There’s no point in waiting around, so if you want to release music, tour and get radio play then go and make it happen! Network, make phone calls, send emails, get involved in the local music scene and work with friends to organise shows, record and make music videos! With music services available now like AWAL Music for independent artists, BBC Introducing, The Unsigned Guide and SYNCR, there’s nothing holding musicians back. As long as you put in the effort, you will get the results.
S] What are your plans for the rest of the year?
We are currently in the middle of ‘The Devils Rhythm’ UK tour that we organised to promote the released of our second vinyl. We also have a new song and music video being released at the end of the month! October will be a quiet month for us and an opportunity to get back to writing as we plan to work with our friend and talented musician Eugene Twist in his new recording studio at the end of the year. Christina already has some interesting ideas and concepts for the next record which involves visiting an old Glasgow theatre. There has also been some interest in us touring Europe at the end of the year or early next year so we are currently discussing that.
S] What have been some career highlights so far?
Successfully self-releasing our music on vinyl twice, opening for Deap Vally and Twin Guns (ex The Cramps), our music being aired on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show and gaining sponsors from Eastwood Guitars and Honeyboy Amps to name a few. We are excited for what’s to come!
