Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on Sunday 26 January and is commemorated with a programme of events around the city of York.
Dave Taylor, Marketing Manager of City Screen, says, “At City Screen we have felt it important to mark this event over a number of years. It is particularly important in York, being the site of one of the first pogroms against Jews in Europe in 1190, when 150 people were killed at York Castle – now known as Clifford’s Tower.”
The Coney Street Picturehouse will participate in the commemoration to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, which this year takes the theme of journeys, by showing the film INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS: STORIES OF THE KINDERTRANSPORT, narrated by Dame Judi Dench.
The documentary tells how the Kindertransport rescue operation saved the lives of more than 10,000 mainly Jewish children by bringing them by train to the UK, where the young refugees were adopted by British families.
Dave continues, “We are especially pleased to welcome Lars Waldorf, a senior lecturer from the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York, to introduce the film at 3pm and to draw modern-day parallels from this historical event.”
