Another spotlight is ready for your ears, and eyes! This time we chat to Quebec, Canada-based rock act Fiction In Motion‘s vocalist Michael Croteau about his band’s inspirations, ideas and plans for the future.
S] What, or who are your great musical inspirations?
M] “We’ve always been inspired by bands that stand out from the rest. Bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, Pink Floyd and Collective Soul. These days, it’s getting hard to distance yourself from what is playing on your radio and still be able to get radio airplay. The industry want us to follow the wave and resign ourselves to the standards, but we don’t want that. We just won’t be that kind of bands you will forget in a year.”
S] What about personally, what kinds of themes and ideas can inspire your songs?
M] “We always take time to discuss about events or problems that surround us. We’re not writing much about personal themes, we try to write songs that everyone can relate to them. War, suicide, love, competition; these are some themes we got inspired from lately.”
S] What song that you are working on right now best defines your sound, and why?
M] “I think we haven’t found that song yet. We wrote more than 60 songs this summer and we know that we still need to find what will distinguish us from the rest. Fiction In Motion will always have songs that get stuck in your head. We wanna play music for everyone, from every age.”
[like_to_read][/like_to_read]S] Do you have a message for any UK fans?
M] “Most of our biggest inspirations come from your country. We’ve always been impressed by the variety of music styles you are listening to. We can’t wait for you to discover our band!”
S] What can people expect from your live show?
M] “Fun. We want fans to be part of the experience. The fans often come on stage and sing with us. We want every show to be unique and people are eager to see the next one because they know it will be different from the last show they’ve seen. Constancy in the energy you give on stage is very important.”
S] What are some of your biggest challenges right now?
M] “Our biggest challenges right now would be doing everything by ourselves. We have neither a label nor a manager working for us. It’s not that we don’t want to, we just wait to find the right team that could put us on the map in the right way. The biggest challenge in being an independent artist, is certainly expand your territory with your own resources. We also work very hard on defining our sound and write the best songs we can.”
S] What’re your plans as we move into 2013?
M] “We will work on a new sound, play shows and probably hit the studio early next year and produce a full length album. We will be showcasing at the Canadian Music Fest next March, in Toronto. Expect to hear more from us in the next months, a lot of new stuff is coming!”
