Next in our series of Reverbnation spotlights, we speak to Christina K of Ottowa punk band, Doll.
S] What, or who are your great musical inspirations?
C] “We are all very inspired by the early 90s grunge era bands like Nirvana, Hole, L7 and Sonic Youth. Style-wise, it’s all over the place, as long as it’s good music we listen to it, whether it be punk, rock, metal or pop and we try to incorporate all our favorite elements into Doll. You never know what’s going to trigger you into writing an amazing song, we could be listening to Slayer all day long and write something like ‘Sleeping In The Clouds Of NYC’, there’s no rhyme or reason to it, but that’s what makes it real.”
S] What about personally, what kinds of themes and ideas can inspire your songs?
C] “It’s definitely a combination of what’s happening in the world today, and past experiences from ourselves. We’re very much into sending out a message of strength, and standing up for yourself, for us the music needs to be as raw and honest as possible. We like to touch on subject matter that maybe some bands would rather avoid, but it needs to be said. A lot of songs come from reading the paper or watching the news and basically being passionate enough about something that we need to express, like ‘If I Could’, it’s about taking revenge on someone for basically stealing your life away, ‘Guardian’ which is about the military, and taking matters into your own hands.”
S] What song that you are working on right now best defines your sound, and why?
C] ‘Plastic Lies’, is a track off our newest album, ‘The Ragdoll Diaries’. I think I really embodies what Doll is about, raw yet melodic, aggressive yet catchy. Lyrically as well it talks about consumerism, capitalism, self-image, self-esteem. It’s available for free download on www.dollband.net.”
[like_to_read][/like_to_read]S] Do you have a message for any UK fans?
C] “We’ve had lots of positive feedback from our UK fans and we’d love to tour your country in the near future. If any promoters can help, get in touch with us via [email protected].”
S] What can people expect from your live show?
C] “We have a very raw, energetic, no bullsh** live show. Doll definitely feeds off the crowd and you never know what you’re going to get, but you’re guaranteed to get 30-45 minutes of face melting rock, honesty, and an amazing opportunity to let loose in the pit or on stage with us going crazy.”
S] What are some of your biggest challenges right now?
C] “Being an independent band is definitely fun but can be challenging at times in terms of reaching a larger fan base, and booking tours out of country, we’ve been pretty lucky so far having toured Canada and the USA, opened up for lots of amazing bands, but the goal of course is to grow the Doll army, and take over the airwaves.”
