In our latest Reverbnation spotlight, we chat to Sarah Goff from The Elizabeth Kill.
S] What, or who are your great musical inspirations
SG] “Each band member has different ones, Jeremiah Roiko (guitar) is a huge Queen fan, Corey Manske (drums) is a Rush fan, and Gabriel Guyer (bass) digs anything creative, Primus for one , and I am inspired by Jim Morrison and Odetta.”
S] What about personally, what kinds of themes and ideas can inspire your songs?
SG] “We come in to the room knowing we want to write, someone starts jamming on something and we all join in until we find a pocket where we feel we really connect. When the Tone of the song is captured that’s when I will improvise and begin the story-telling. If I finds the chorus early it makes it a lot easier to write the rest of the song, but any ideas can inspire, even a silly joke made in conversation. And we have a lot of conversations! Hanging out and vibing together is a big part of how we can trust each other in the universe of sound.”
S] What song that you are working on right now best defines your sound, and why?
SG] “‘Viral'”. it’s not released yet, but I think this brings out the best in each player. It’s dynamic, energetic and the story is strong. It’s about the kid who taught himself how to fly planes and was greatly mislead and therefore, misunderstood. I took the approach of imagining the band joining him on these escapades of flying around. Everyone wants to be loved and have freedom in their lives. That is a main theme that runs threw The Elizabeth Kill’s songs.”
S] Do you have a message for any UK fans?
SG] “We hope to see you sooner than later!”
S] What can people expect from your live show?
SG] “High-energy rock ‘n’ roll that shares dark empathetic moments to inspire your journey.”
S] What are some of your biggest challenges right now?
SG] “We are really focused on reaching out and hearing what people like! There is a lot of music out there and we are always looking for new ways to meet and greet like-minded people.”
S] What’re your plans as we move into 2013?
SG] “To continue to write music that makes us feel and helps us discover more. We will be playing in the Los Angeles area and hopefully beyond. Ever forward!”
