Stoke band Black Coast’s whirlwind of a new single ‘MOTION’, out today, is a cathartic externalisation of internal pressures. Vocalist Charlie Hewitt says: “MOTION is really about my own struggles with feeling like I can never slow down. There’s this constant pressure to keep going and I find it hard to just stop and let go; mentally and physically, it takes a toll. What hits me the hardest is how easy it is to hide what’s going on inside. People can pretend everything’s fine, but deep down, they’re struggling. This song is for anyone who’s ever felt like that. It’s something I deal with, and I think a lot of people will relate.”
The accompanying music video for the track (which premieres at 6pm today) embodies its central theme of an internal battle. As Hewitt explains, “The concept behind the MOTION video visualises the internal battle I face. It’s a journey through different forms of torment, things that aren’t always visible on the surface but become exposed in the video. The visuals capture the feeling of being at war inside yourself as these struggles are brought to light, reflecting the intense emotions and mental strain that often remain unseen for most people who interact with you.”
Since releasing their critically-acclaimed, self-titled EP last year, as well as playing iconic festivals such as Bloodstock, Black Coast have been on a journey to redefine their sound, breaking free from the constraints of genre classification. “This freedom has given us the space to experiment, a process that’s fully realised in ‘MOTION’,” they comment. “With invaluable input from Sam Bloor and Jonny Price in the studio, we’ve explored fresh ideas, recording a diverse array of songs that stretch our style in new directions. In tandem with our long-time collaborator Joe Berisford, we’ve crafted visuals that delve deeper, creating an immersive experience that connects to the heart of each new track. We can’t wait to share the full depth of what we’ve been working on, both sonically and visually.”
So anticipation levels are high with plenty on the horizon for Black Coast, including more new music to come, a run of UK tour dates before 2024 is over and festival slots slated for 2025. See below for details.
