The song reflects lead singer Joseph Hitchcock’s tumultuous emotions, exploring the dynamic of his relationship at the time. This was one where two individuals find comfort in each other’s presence, yet honesty remains elusive.

Echoing LCD Soundsystem, Foals, and Bloc Party the track makes use of haunting pianos and ethereal synths before gradually building to a vibrant and bouncy indie rock crescendo.

On the single, Hitchcock said “This song started in my head in 2018, as just the piano intro, the low C, going up to the G and back down to the C forever. Some of the lyrics came then, as well. I was living in an apartment in Seattle’s Chinatown with over 10 other people, it wasn’t a great place to live, but I was getting on with this girl who also lived there who was a teacher and an escort on the side, and since marijuana is legal there we were both just sort of experimenting and watching anime and one thing led to another and I still don’t know how I feel about the whole thing, so I wrote a surreal song because my feelings are still murky. I don’t even know if I wanted a relationship from it but I don’t think she did and everything got so confusing. I hope she’s doing alright.”

ANALOGUE TRASH described the band, “Paper Anthem add complex progressions and deeper, more meaningful lyrics than that genre usually has, bringing to mind acts like Foals and Foo Fighters in terms of the overall tone and emotional impact”
