Over the last few years, Belmondo have established themselves as one of the most exciting new voices in the alternative rock scene. They’ve toured with Filter, and received endorsements from Radio 1’s Daniel P Carter, Distorted Sound, V13 and Bring The Noise among others. With members from France, Switzerland and the UK, their geographic distance seems to bear out in their musical breadth, taking cues from post-punk, industrial, and indie-pop.
Now, the quartet have seen fit to drop a batch of 4 fresh tracks with their EP ‘The Blessed and the Evil’, produced by Jag Jago. It features the well-received singles ‘Bethlehem’ and Ventriloquist’, along with two brand new cuts, ‘Getting Closer’ and ‘The Journey of Moses on the Nile.’
It’s been described as “A record of great importance for the band”, that sees them truly finding their own distinct sound. Speaking about the EP in a statement, the band called the journey towards its release “a journey to say the least”, and said it was “a joy” to finally get them out into the world. “We’ve poured so much of ourselves into these songs. We hope you love them as much as we do.”
The band also took time to speak about the two new tracks, and give fans hints of what to expect. About ‘Getting Closer’, the band say “It’s about going out and not knowing if you’re fitted enough in the place you are with others. I have the bad habit of overthinking if people actually like me. The lyrics are a realisation of how I can feel myself and behave.”
Additionally, singer and bassist Carmen Mellino shares insight into “The Journey of Moses on The Nile”, takes a more open-ended approach, not being about any specific subject. “It echoes multiple things that touched my life: my ex-boyfriend leaving me a kiss on the neck before going to work, a quick reference to Billy Corgan, and my anxiety related in the image of Moses. I just thought that a baby in a wicker basket that’d surf on a tormented river full of crocodiles would not be the most pleasant thing ever. And I can tell you, it’s not!”
‘The Blessed and The Evil’ out now on Silent Cult Records. The band also play The Great Escape Festival in Brighton on the 16th and 18th of May.
